The first Design Challenge for my image class is to create a series of 10 digital illustrations. In this post I will be showing Mind-maps, sketches, traced images, color variants, and the final 10 images.

Mind Maps/Sketches:

Below are some pictures that show a mind-map, feedback, and multiple sketches of my chosen idea. I initially wrote down eyes because it is a concept that interests me. I then brainstormed ideas surrounding it. At first, I didn’t know if I wanted to create different eyes or the same eye. During feedback, someone suggested that I should do the eyes in a similar style. I decided that I wanted to pursue this idea, so my plan became to create stylistically similar eyes but at different stages: baby, teen, adult, elderly. The image inside the eye will correlate to the person’s age and their point of view on life/ what they see as important.

I also included pictures of other mind maps and sketches for two other ideas that I did not end up choosing.

Image trace/enhanced:

The following 8 pictures show the initial image trace next to the enhanced and manipulated version.

Color variants of one selected image:

I selected one of my manipulated images and created 4 color variants. The first one is complementary (green with tints of red). The next color variant is triad (red, blue and yellow), then analogous (purple, blue) and finally monochromatic (brown).

One selected variant on distinct backgrounds:

I selected the complementary color variant and set the illustration on 4 different backgrounds. The background colors I chose were red, green, light tan, and black. Each background changed the illustration but I decided to use the light tan background because it looked more human/realistic when matched with the complementary color variant.

Final 10 images:

The eyes belong to the same person, but at different stages in their life. Birth, infancy, adolescence, adulthood, old age, and finally death. The pupil is replaced by a small image. The image represents what was seen as the most important thing for that person during that time.
