Audio eVisions

Prompt: For this major project, you will be tasked with creating an abstract audio visualization experience using 3D modeling and sound reaction. Specifically, you will need to create a 45-60 second long animation in which sound and audio are visually affecting objects and elements within your project

Final Video:

All Music used:

Dub Hub - Jimmy Fontane

All Stars - Patrick Patrikios

Drunk Text - Single Friend

Process for Audio eVision#1 :

For the first audio eVision I wanted to start with something simple, I followed a tutorial but I experimented with my own colors and movement. This tutorial was simple because the cubes were the main objects used and I just duplicated the same sheet. However, the camera was placed in between layers so I struggled with the lighting at first. I then figured out I could add a light probe- ReflectionCubemap and that made the lighting look much better. The animation was 15 seconds and it took 20-25 minutes to render.

Process for Audio eVision #2:

This second Audio eVision was very fun to re-create. I started off with a cylinder that was then changed into a hexagon shape, this would work as the tunnel. The abstract shape is a Icosphere with a bezier circle and "Empty". The Icosphere has a displace modifier, which had the bake sound to f-curves. I also added a ReflectionCubemap to help with the lighting. The shading took the most time because I kept experimenting with the nodes, also it was difficult to see the animation in the timeline because my computer started to run very slow. The animation was 15 seconds and it took 8-9 hours to render.

This Audio eVision is similar to the previous one because it's also a tunnel, but it doesn't have an object traveling inside. I added a cylinder and it has a displace modifier as well with a bezier circle and empty. This animation also had extensive shading which slowed down the timeline. I also added a RelfectionCubemap to improve the lighting and had screen space reflection checked. The animation was 15 seconds and it took 8-9 hours to render.

Process for Audio eVision #4:

For this last Audio eVision I started with a flat plane and the rest was done in shading. To get the shapes seen in the animation, you use the Voronoi Texture and Musgrave Texture. So the shapes aren't flat you also use the array modifier and stack the on top of each other. The array modifier has object offset checked and an empty controlling the movement. The empty key frames the bake sound to f-curves. It was difficult to see how the animation looked because it was playing very slowly in the timeline. The animation was 15 seconds and it took 8-9 hours to render. When I watched it back I thought it was way too fast but I decided I could slow it down in editing.

Once I had all the individual clips I combined them in premiere, I also tried to slow down the last audio eVision because it was faster compared to the others. I used three songs and tried to combine them in a way that made sense. Overall, I'm happy with the result, with more time I would have changed the song I used for the last animation.
